Doug's "Why I Ride"

Based on a trip from San Diego to Fort Worth May 2009

Brothers,

I have just returned from a trip to California, taking my step-son Randy back to Camp Pendleton. As some of you know, my world has been spinning just a little too fast lately. I took Randy, his car, a U-Haul truck and my bike out west. Coming home on the bike was a therapeutic experience.

Running through the mountains towards Yuma, being able to look up and see stars, not city lights or the roof of the car, was truly moving. 1500 miles of the wind in my face, the hum of the scooter beneath me set my heart at peace.  Even the small mechanical issues we all encounter, low beam burning out, loose handgrip, couldn't detract from the pleasure. Winding across hundreds of miles of Interstate, smelling new mown hay, sand and freedom, I was reminded of why I ride. It's not about running from one bar to another. It's not about meeting and fretting over whether there's "correct" grammar in the Bylaws. It's really about being on the bike; feeling free and running up miles.

I believe it's time we all get back to that motivation.

See you on the road.

Semper Fi,

Doug

Randy's car is loaded. Nothing in the U-Haul but my bike and suitcase.

Miles and miles of nothing but scenery to contemplate life by.

Oddly enough, it looks the same in both directions.

At one time, this must have been civilization.

Desolate country?

Nope, it's Kemp, Texas public schools.
