Doug's Version of Fredericksburg

I'm attaching a couple of photos of Vincent Schuttera, the Marine veteran's plaque unveiling that Andy and I had the honor of attending. He's a genuinely down-to-earth individual and very low-key about his service, however, he is extremely proud of being a Marine. He even lived down the street from the legendary Pappy Boyington at one point. He was very grateful that we made the trip just for him. He and the woman who made the initial contact thanked Andy and I about 20 times for coming down.

On the ride down, Andy and I did our best to avoid the freeway, only using 2 1/2 miles of I-35 to get to our exit out of Fort Worth. We wandered through the backroads to Hwy 67 in Cleburne and followed it towards Glen Rose. As we passed the first temperature sign in town it said it was 105. The next block down it was 103. I decided to split the difference and call it F..ing hot. On to Hico, where we stopped for ice water and the necessary pie. Leaving town down Hwy 281, we zipped through lots of interesting countryside. Including Lampasas, which was having a Spring Ho celebration. I guess they're proud of their Hos? I was amazed at the large number of dead animals along the roadway. Lots of skunks and several deer. I thought they were out of season?

After we made the turn out of Johnson City on 290, Andy decided he needed gas for his scooter, so we turned around and headed back to town. Demanding dinner, (it was only 20:30!) he pulled in to a TAVERN and grill that wasn't serving food because it was after 1800. Andy ordered a beer cold enough to freeze his brain. After the refreshing adult beverages, and much complaint about not getting real food, we rode on into Fredericksburg. Success!! On the right was Mamacita's Mexican Restaurant. We pulled in and parked only to find that it was 21:33 and they closed at 21:30. We ended up at Subway.

The morning of the ceremony was pretty impressive. The tour of the museum was good. I highly recommend it.

We opted to ride back straight up Hwy 16 to Dublin and in on Hwy 377. Interesting road and some very strange names. I had never heard of Baby Head Cemetery. But I bet it would make a good picture. We just didn't stop for that. We made it home just in time for rush hour.

Sorry this turned out a bit longer than intended.

Semper Fi,

Doug
